Brevard, NC Town Overview
Brevard is a congenial small town with many big town ammenities in a beautiful location. Not only are there cultural opportunities and events through Brevard College and the Paul Porter Center for the Performing Arts, but Transylvania County has over 200 waterfalls and is the home of some of the top trout streams in the United States, as well as Pisgah National Forest with its many miles of biking and hiking trails.
History: Brevard's rich history began in the late 1800s when pioneers settled the area for farming due to the lush, green valleys and beautiful mountain terrain. In fact, most of the area now covered by forests was used in the early days as farm land. In the 1800s the population was substantial enough for the original settlers to apply to have a new town recognized in the area and in 1861 the North Carolina House of Commons approved a bill to recognize Transylvania County and a town within its borders. The new town of Brevard contained it residents, a jail, churches, a courthouse and the dozen or so resident's homes. At the beginning of the twentieth century a rail line was built in Brevard allowing the town to grow. The railway allowed wealthy visitors to vacation in the area and opened up the town's strong lumber industry.
